Margarima
A framework for sustainable development in a remote mountain town

About

Margarima is a town in Papua New Guinea sparsely populated with low rise buildings. As a result of its unplanned nature, the two ends of the town lack connection with essential services disconnected. The town also lacks a centre, with prime spaces occupied by small dwellings and agricultural land. The masterplan for Margarima seeks to rectify this and create a diverse urban plan centred around nature and sport by re-organising infrastructure and key buildings in the town.

The Program mix reflects the desire to create an economically diverse and sustainable town with a combination of public, commercial and residential programs forming a backbone for the development. In designing, care was taken to integrate the new built-environment and the natural surroundings so that neither overwhelms the other.

Outside of the town’s boundaries, development is planned to benefit and give back to the natural realm. Eco-resorts attract tourists into the heart of nature whilst showcasing a way to live alongside it with strong eco principles. The development is balanced amongst nature, with sustainable materials, waste management, food production, and human wellness prioritised.
